16k for a car loan… what now?

My girlfriend just got hit with garnishment after a failed appeal. She only makes about 1k a month, and they’re asking for 25%. Any advice?

Did she get a court notice and skip the hearing?

She didn’t skip. We went and even appealed, but the court said they never got it. We sent proof—emails, printed appeals with dates—still no response. Then they defaulted her.

This debt has gone through all the stages. Now the real issue is figuring out how she can survive while paying this off. She might need to get another part-time job or switch to full-time work. If that’s not an option, maybe you can help her pay it. Not ideal, but I don’t see a quick fix here.

Thanks for the straightforward response. We might have one last shot to show the appeal issues in court.

What’s the status of the car?

It was repossessed before we got together. She had to move for her safety, and her ex, who co-signed, refused to pay as retaliation.

Love can be pricey… good luck to you both.

Lesson learned: never co-sign a loan unless you can pay it off alone.

Former debt collector here. The best thing you can do is stay in touch with creditors. If you lose your job, call them and explain. Skipping payments without communication gets you garnished. When it’s in collections, pick up the phone, even if you don’t recognize the number. Ignoring it leads to lawsuits and garnishments. Show this to your girlfriend and make sure this doesn’t happen again.

@Sam
She didn’t ignore calls. The appeal wasn’t processed, and after some personal issues, she’s now working part-time instead of full-time.

Let’s be real: she messed up somewhere in filing that appeal. Courts don’t just lose paperwork. Now she’s garnished. What’s next? Pay it off, find a better job, or let her credit go to trash. Your choice.

I’m asking for next steps on garnishment, not a lecture. This happened before we got together, and we’ve followed every rule. Stop assuming.

Feels like talking to a wall. Do you have anything useful to add?
