@Rene
Yeah, but in some states, his debt might legally become hers. It’s crazy how laws vary from state to state.
@Azar
It’s really gross that banks pull stunts like this. I remember being asked why I didn’t want loan insurance when I was applying for one. I had to explain that no one inherits my debt if I die. Yet, they kept pushing.
@Azar
Banks moral? LOL. They got bailed out 16 years ago and are probably gearing up for the next one.

A credit card company trying to preach morality to me
@Azar
My mom left some credit card debt when she passed. I was the executor, and two years later, some collector tried to say they’d sue me personally for it. I said, ‘Let me know what you’re wearing to court so we don’t show up in the same outfit.’ Never heard from them again.
@Azar
Good to know! I’m helping my dad with his finances after my mom got scammed out of a lot of money, so any tips are appreciated. Chase is one of their banks too.
@Azar
Just wanted to jump in here to thank everyone for the advice. I’ve added more details to my original post, so feel free to check it out for more context.
@Azar
Just be careful. If any of the deceased’s assets are distributed before settling debts, creditors could come after the heirs for whatever they received.
Nobody is liable for these debts. It’s actually illegal for them to try to collect from you.

They can still come after the estate though. OP mentioned no will or savings, but assets like a house are part of the estate. Definitely worth consulting a lawyer. If there are assets, the creditors are entitled to them.
@Haim
He has a wife, though. Wouldn’t she be responsible for paying since her income is tied to his estate?

Time to open more credit cards, am I right?
I’ll probably rack up some debt before I go. Why not?

No need to wait! Start now
When my dad passed, he had some credit card debt and no will. My mom got his stuff out of default and never had to pay off the cards.
