Did I Make an Okay Decision?

A month ago, my old and unreliable car broke down, and the repair cost was around $2,500. I decided to sell it and buy a newer, more reliable car because I needed something dependable, especially since I’m majoring in broadcasting and sometimes have to travel long distances for projects. The new car will cost me $440 a month.

I have two jobs, making around $1,000 a month from one and between $700 and $800 a month from the other. I also have to pay $800 a month for university and $110 a month for a loan. Fortunately, my parents are helping me with my insurance costs. However, I don’t qualify for financial aid due to immigration status issues.

I’m wondering if I made a good decision in getting the car, and my main concern is whether I’ll have enough money left to enjoy life outside of my classes.

So almost all of your $1000 goes towards school and loan payments leaving you with around $800 for bills and other things? Meaning over half of what you have left goes towards a new car payment. Also did you get a reasonable car? $440 sounds like a lot unless you got like an SUV or something a little more expensive car wise. You would have been better to buy a cheaper used car and get a smaller payment. You can get some reliable used cars that will work just as well if not better than a new car.

Since your parents are taking care of insurance and you don’t get financial aid, it looks like you’re handling your essentials pretty well. If you find yourself running low, it might be a good idea to watch your spending and see where you can cut back. But overall, it seems like you should have enough to cover what you need and still have some fun.
