I’m 41 and moving back in with my parents. I’m an alcoholic and in 55k debt—30k from a deficiency balance and 25k on credit cards. I had money once, but now it’s all gone. This really sucks, but at least I have a place to go.
The first step is quitting drinking. That has to come before tackling the debt.
I lost my mom to alcoholism, so let me just say this:
Your past mistakes don’t define your future. Go to an AA meeting, find a sponsor, and take it one day at a time. Every day you don’t drink is progress.
Get a job, pay down your debts, and be thankful for another chance to turn things around.

Yeah, thanks God for this amazing life full of problems.

Actually, my house isn’t paid off, and I owe more than it’s worth. Guess I am in debt after all.
@Linden
Didn’t you just say your house was paid off?
@Linden
Sounds like you don’t actually own your house yet.

If you’ve got so much going for you, why are you so miserable? People won’t change, but you can change how you view them and your own situation.

Not to be rude, but maybe you’re the problem. Also, Lexus isn’t as great as you think.
@Parrish
Lexus being bad is probably the most ridiculous thing I’ve read today.

They’re just fancy Toyotas. End of story.
@Parrish
Jealous much? Thanks for proving my point.

Not jealous at all. I’m a Nissan guy.
I’ve been sober for four years. I used to spend $300k in three years on drinking, cocaine, and resorts. I was drowning in $150k credit card debt and living with my parents while my wife cared for our newborn.
I got sober through meetings, therapy, and working the steps. Now, my life is better than ever. I’ve paid off most of the debt and have a great life with my family.
If I can do it, you can too. Don’t give up.
@Storm
That’s incredible. Congrats!
@Storm
Proud of you. Keep it up.
I used to drink heavily but quit cold turkey. In a year, I’ve lost 40 lbs and switched to non-alcoholic beer like Heineken Zero. It’s way healthier for me.
As for your debt, file for bankruptcy if needed. I’ve done it before and bounced back. You can get through this.
This world is a mess. People max out credit cards just to survive, then file for bankruptcy. Jobs are full of terrible people. I just want to revolt.

Not everyone is bad. Maybe half the people are good, the rest not so much.
