Love The Radio Dept … any similar bands to check out?

The Radio Dept is easily my favorite band in the shoegaze/dream pop scene. They blend nostalgic vibes with just the right amount of noise pop, dreaminess, and electronica.

I’ve tried Craft Spells, but their sound doesn’t click with me. Beach House scratches a similar itch, but I already listen to them a lot.

I’m looking for something close to the style of Keen on Boys or The Video Dept. Any suggestions?

I feel the same way. They’re kind of in their own little world.

I love The Radio Dept too! You might like these:

  • Ruby Haunt
  • Lotus Plaza
  • The Meeting Places
  • Pinback
  • Day Wave
  • Teethe

Ruby Haunt and Teethe are great, but they’re a bit more slowcore for me. Still, solid suggestions, thanks!

Didn’t know it was the guitarist from Deerhunter.

@Cairo
Check out Lifetime of Love by Moon Diagrams when you can. It’s amazing—listen when you’re in a good mood.

Day Wave had a song on the Watch Dogs soundtrack. I remember blasting it while speeding through Chicago in the game.

Funny, I was just thinking how underrated they are. Parts of Clinging to a Scheme remind me of early Aphex Twin tracks. It’s probably the drum machines and reverb. If you haven’t yet, check out Selected Ambient Works.

Pet Grief is a gem. If you want a similar vibe, try Studio’s Yearbook 1. It’s less shoegaze and more beat-driven, but still has that dreamy sound. Check out Life’s a Beach—it’s a masterpiece in my opinion.

Listen here

Give these a shot:

  • Beach Fossils
  • High Highs
  • The Bilinda Butchers
  • Melody’s Echo Chamber
  • Chromatics
  • Starflyer 59

The Bilinda Butchers are criminally underrated.

You might like In Ghost Colours by Cut Copy. It’s not as moody, but they also mix rock, electronic, and pop in an interesting way.

Here’s a track.

These bands might fit the vibe:

  • Zoon
  • R. Missing
  • Starflyer 59
  • Boards of Canada
  • Club 8
  • Junip

Boards of Canada always hits the spot.

Try The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Rocketship. Both have that same nostalgic, coming-of-age-movie vibe as The Radio Dept.

This is spot on.

Rocketship is amazing and so slept on. If you like those, check out The Depreciation Guild and Airiel too.

Cloud Nothings gives me an ‘angry’ version of The Radio Dept vibes. Maybe try A Sunny Day in Glasgow?
